DESCRIPTION OF THE LOCALITY
There are few places in the world where the mountains and the sea meet at such close quarters, creating such breathtaking beauty as on the coast of Southern Campania. The Costiera Amalfitana is rightly regarded as the most beautiful coast on the Italian peninsula, and has been a UNESCOs world cultural heritage site since 1997. Between Vietri sul Mare and Positano stretches an impetuous coast dotted with curves and bends, with hidden bays and steep ledges - at its back the precipitous spurs of the Monti Lattari, the cliffs washed at by clear, emerald green water.
Bold and striking, bright white villages hug the steep slopes. The centrally located town of Ravello for example - with its pretty heart and elegant residences - has inspired many a musician and writer: Richard Wagner composed the second act of Parsifal here in 1900, Graham Green wrote The Third Man here and Pier Paolo Pasolini used the town as a backdrop for scenes in his film Decamerone. Even today, Ravello enchants modern travellers from around the world through its atmosphere as if suspended in time, in the terrazzo gardens of Villa Rufolo high above the sea or in the park of Villa Cimbrone with its spectacular view of the coast and the sea.
Only a few miles away is Amalfi. This white city on the sea, once one of the four maritime republics alongside Genoa, Pisa and Venice, is a labyrinth of narrow streets, small squares and covered walkways, with the impressive architecture of the Sant
Andrea cathedral towering above it. Here in Amalfi is the start of the panorama path through the Valle delle Ferriere nature reserve, the valley of the ironworks. Not just for passionate walkers and hikers, this beautiful route takes visitors through shady forest areas and past rushing streams, waterfalls and deep canyons. Between them lie the ruins of old paper mills, today silent witnesses to the regions once worldwide respected paper industry.
If you keep an eye out, you will find a wealth of botanical rarities to the left and right of the path, which only grow in the particularly damp, almost subtropical microclimate of this particular valley. Other gems on this coast are Atrani, Praiano and of course Positano, the enchanting town almost suspended
between the sea and the sky. Typically for this coast, Positano is a veritable jigsaw of flights of stairs, little terrazzos, squares and winding streets, with pastel-coloured houses grouped around them. Cascades of bougainvillea in all colours and shades drape across the buildings. Positano is a very popular destination for the international jetset, also loved by writers, painters and musicians. The town is also known for its many workshops, manufacturing shoes and clothing. It is the origin of Positano-style fashion, mainly working with cotton and linen.
And this stretch of coast has no lack of culinary delicacies to offer either: fish soup, spaghetti with clams, fried anchovies with mint and totani con patate, fried octopus with potatoes - all absolutely irresistible for friends of Mediterranean cuisine.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PROPERTY
Where the endless azure sky meets the sea, high above the Amalfi coast, is where you will find the Villa Positano. The house is only accessible on foot. The oriental feel of the houses entry makes a mysterious impression. It seems almost as if you were walking through an ancient wheelarch doorway into an enchanted refuge. In fact it is as if a whole new world were opening up, with a breathtaking, unhindered view of the Gulf of Salerno and its coastal villages.
Inside the house, the cupola architecture is continued in the vault-like ceilings - plenty of Mediterranean air to breathe both inside and outside.
The apartment is decorated in friendly style. An antique stone fireplace brings back memories of days gone by. The blue and green tones of the sky and the sea are reflected in the colour scheme and the decorative Mediterranean tiles. If you feel like getting lost in a book or the endless waves of the ocean, the covered terrazzo is the perfect place for quiet hours. Musicians and music lovers should also feel perfectly at home here - enjoying the rare experience of playing on a beautiful grand piano while relaxing on holiday.
